João Lourenço Cima passed away in 1925, but he left behind one of Lisbon's most charismatic establishments, now in the hands of the fourth generation of his descendants.
He began working at "A Ginjinha," founded in 1840 in Largo de São Domingos, under the guidance of Galician Francisco Espinheira. Things seemed to be going well until, as the story goes, the boss wanted the employee to marry his only daughter. The disagreement led to a falling-out, and João Lourenço decided to open his own establishment just a few doors up, at number seven on Rua das Portas de Santo Antão. He diversified into liqueurs, created his own recipe, and named it "Ginjinha sem Rival" (Unrivaled Ginjinha) to put an end to all disputes.
