Your Complete Travel Guide on the Christmas Delights of North Portugal: Food, Wine, and Festivities

Updated: Dec 6, 2023

As the holiday season approaches, it's time to embrace the Christmas spirit in Porto! This festive time brings together cherished moments with family and friends, accompanied by a delightful array of celebrations. In Portugal, where nature and culinary expertise converge seamlessly, the gastronomy shines brightest during Christmas.

Let's embark on a journey through my top picks for Portuguese wines and delicacies, crafted specially for this enchanting season.

In Portugal, the holiday season is synonymous with warm gatherings at the homes of friends and family. Often, these visits happen unexpectedly, but worry not! Portuguese sausages and cheeses come to the rescue, offering a ready-to-serve meal for those impromptu but cherished moments.

Creating a charcuterie board is effortless with a selection of salpicão, chouriço, ham, and the flavorful alheira, a smoked sausage made with a blend of pork or game, bread, olive oil, salt, garlic, and paprika. Similarly, assembling a cheese board featuring exquisite Terrincho sheep cheese, Serrana hard goat cheese from Trás-os-Montes, a melting cheese from Serra da Estrela, and the spicy S. Jorge from Azores is a delightful treat. These intense flavors demand a fine wine pairing.

An "Arcossó" Colheita red from Trás-os-Montes or the crisp "Arcossó" Colheita white perfectly complement these robust flavors.

For the traditional Portuguese Christmas Eve dinner, tables are adorned with care and laden with classic dishes like octopus and codfish, accompanied by an array of vegetables, all generously drizzled with extra virgin olive oil.

Traditionally, one might suggest a full-bodied red wine to pair with the richness of the dish, but Portugal's exquisite white wines offer an equally splendid option. Consider the slightly oaky "Aneto" Reserva White from Douro or the Vinho Verde "Quinta de Carapeços" Alvarinho Reserva, rich in complexity with hints of sweet wood and citrus.

The Christmas lunch, featuring the leftover farrapo velho, perfectly complements the mouth-filling complexity of "Caminhos Cruzados" from Dão.

And no Christmas feast is complete without desserts and sweet wines! Amid the savory delights, two cherished desserts steal the show: Bolo Rei and Rabanadas, freshly prepared and served warm.

For a divine finale, the Douro "Aneto" Colheita Tardia, a distinct late harvest wine, or the "Quinta do Javali" 20-year-old tawny Port, with notes of fig jam and dried fruits, create a symphony of flavors to elevate your dining experience.

These delightful indulgences are best enjoyed amidst the company of loved ones during the Christmas season.

Warm wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Sintra Explorers!
